Climate Change Adaptation Measures Toolbox

Content pages

This page provides a comprehensive and easy to use toolbox of possible adaptation measures. Please select one or more of the group filters below to obtain detailed information on the measures of interest.

Please find more information in the ICPDR Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change.

Structural flood protection / adaptation of urban infrastructure

  • Implementation of artificial infiltration and retardation to reduce impermeable areas

  • Creation of local storages (ponds, building storages, groundwater cisterns)

  • Construction of new protection structures e.g. tidal barriers

  • Construction and renewal of polders

  • Permanent maintenance of technical protection structures

  • Adaptation of stream canalization

Studying / assessment of structural measures before implementation

  • Consideration of ecological aspects, because they are known to generate significant impacts on the water courses (morphological changes, barriers to fish migration, etc.)

Support adaptation programmes of companies

  • Support water company business plans that draw attention to vital aspects of adaptation programmes, e.g. the need to protect critical infrastructure or ensure the safety of dams and reservoirs (reconstruction and enlargement of most of the existing spillway structures will be needed over a large part of Europe)

Support transport on waterways

  • Shifting from other transport modes that are potentially more harmful to the climate, such as road transport

  • Offer competitive alternatives in the ‘door-to-door’ logistical chain
