Permanent Secretariat
The Secretariat of the ICPDR is located at the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). A team of approximately 10 staff members support the work of the ICPDR and its expert & task groups, assist with project development and implementation, and maintains the ICPDR's 'DANUBIS' information system.
The ICPDR Permanent Secretariat was officially opened in 1999, and is located on the premises of the United Nations (Vienna International Centre) in Vienna, Austria.
There are 9 permanent staff members and additional short-term project staff at the secretariat. If all national experts, delegates from observers and consultants are considered, there are more than 300 people working with and for the ICPDR.
In 2000, its contracting parties nominated the ICPDR as the platform for the implementation of all transboundary aspects of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). The successful implementation of the WFD is therefore clearly high on the political agendas of the countries of the Danube River Basin District. In 2007, the ICPDR also took responsibility for coordinating the implementation of the EU Floods Directive within the Danube River Basin.
General management and supervisory functions are carried out by the Executive Secretary, Ms. Birgit Vogel. Professional technical staff ("Technical Experts") supervise and control the quality of the Secretariat’s main functions and tasks, supported by administrative staff members. The Secretariat also draws support from project staff and interns, as well as external consultants.
