Other River Basin Organisations
Rivers are a natural resource that have been a focal point of transboundary governance for centuries. It is challenging to manage them for the benefit of riparian communities – especially if they are transboundary. This requires the development of a water infrastructure to harvest the socioeconomic benefits, while at the same time protecting the ecosystem for future generations.
River Basin Organizations (RBOs) have been established in many of the world’s basins to better coordinate different stakeholders’ actions and foster cooperation instead of conflict. On 2-3 June 2017 the sixth Youth Parliament of the Sava River Basin competition was held in Belgrade (Serbia). The motto for this year’s competition was “The Impact of Climate Change on the Lives of the Sava River Basin”. 60 students and teachers from nine secondary schools from the Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina attended. The Sava Commission is an observer of the ICPDR.
Spain's Segura River wins IRF European RiverPrize
Vienna, 3 March 2016. The Segura River of Spain has been named the winner of the International RiverFoundation's 2016 European Riverprize. The award ceremony took place in Vienna's city hall for the third time.
River Mur wins IRF European Riverprize 2014
Vienna, 28 October 2014. The IRF European Riverprize 2014 was awarded to the Austrian stretch of the River Mur. All three finalists were from the Danube River Basin.
Rhine Commission wins International Riverprize
Canberra, 16 September 2014. The International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine (ICPR) won the 2014 Thiess International Riverprize. The award was presented in front of river professionals from all over the world at the Riverprize Gala Dinner, held in conjunction with the International Riversymposium. This follows the award of the European Riverprize last year.
